Overview

Located in Chicago’s Belmont Cragin neighborhood, this project transforms an existing 4,500 SF single-story structure into a vibrant, two-story hub for community impact. The 5,500 SF vertical addition creates a new home for the Northwest Side Community Development Corporation (NWSCDC)—a subsidiary of the Northwest Center—providing the organization with a modern, light-filled environment that supports its mission of preserving affordable housing, preventing displacement, and empowering local businesses. The expansion maintains close physical and operational connection to the Northwest Center below, strengthening a shared commitment to community advancement.

Challenge

NWSCDC required a dedicated office space that could support its expanding programs while preserving the continuity of operations in the existing Northwest Center facility. The design team needed to integrate a substantial second-floor addition without compromising the character of the original building or introducing disruption to daily activity. The new space also needed to visually communicate NWSCDC’s identity—centered on empowerment, inclusivity, and forward momentum—through material choices, daylighting, and architectural expression.
Vertical Expansion

Integrate a significant second-floor addition without disrupting ongoing operations.

Structural & Spatial Integration

Maintain continuity between the existing Northwest Center and the new NWSCDC workspace.

Identity & Experience

Create an environment that reflects NWSCDC’s mission of empowerment, inclusivity, and community impact.

Light, Comfort & Performance

Introduce abundant natural light and improve building performance within a compact urban footprint.

Solution

Blue Line partnered with the design and construction teams to implement a coordinated exterior envelope strategy that delivered aesthetic consistency, installation efficiency, and long-term performance. By aligning façade components early in the design process, the team ensured each building met affordable-housing standards, maintained design cohesion, and simplified field coordination. The result is a unified rainscreen system that enhances energy efficiency, durability, and architectural expression across the entire development.

Outcome & Impact

The completed project delivers a modern, welcoming environment that strengthens NWSCDC’s capacity to serve the community. The expansion provides dedicated space for program growth, improved staff collaboration, and an architectural expression that reflects the organization’s forward-thinking values. Enhanced daylight, improved building performance, and a seamless connection between the two floors contribute to a more productive and engaging workplace.

For the surrounding community, the project stands as a visible investment in neighborhood stability and economic empowerment—reinforcing NWSCDC’s presence and mission for years to come.
